Maybe it’s the wholesomeness of Judy Garland’s blue gingham frock in the Wizard of Oz or adorable homeware that never makes me think of gingham as a high fashion fabric. It’s also something I associate with the ’60s mod culture or mod-associated designers like Fred Perry and Ben Sherman. There was, of course, Christopher Kane’s stellar gingham turn in Spring 2010 that really pushed the fabric into sexier pastures. Céline got a bit gingham-y for fall but, now, with Michael Kors, Diane Von Furserburg, Oscar de la Renta, and Joseph Altazurra, we have an official trend.
Trend, of course, is a silly word for a fabric that always manages to find its place in our wardrobe, but perhaps it’s just getting a little louder now. Consider Oscar de la Renta’s lady-that-lunches oversized gingham, or Atuzarra’s woman that power suits to the office and slips into a slinky cocktail number right after. For Diane Von Furstenberg gingham gets a sexy Brigitte Bardot treatment, in form of sheer chiffon and lace overlay. And Michael Kors keeps it most causal, with crinkly seersucker separates.
