Six(issues 6, 5, 7, 3 (1989-1991)
I was far too young to have known of Comme des Garçons’ Six publication in the late ’80s, but I saw the copies at the “Future Beauty” exhibit and was immediately prompted to try to track them down. I did. The entire series of eight issues is now retailed at $2,596 at LNCC. Not a surprise: that is how loyal and crazy Comme des Garçons fans can be.
Each issue was produced to coincide with the launch of every new CDG’s collection — so biannually, because CDG never bothered with Resort and Pre-Fall. Rei Kawakubo’s frequent collaborator, Tsuguya Inoue, served as an art director, with contributions by — oh, everyone — Bruce Weber, Peter Lindbergh, Yohji Yamamoto, John Malkovich, Gilbert and George, and Saul Leiter, just to name drop a few.
Kawakubo closed the publication in 1991, but has recently re-launched it in the form of an iPad app called “Moving Six.” It’s obviously not the same as the old issues, but it’s fun and, most importantly, free.
