Vogue Japan (October 2011)
Daily Mail did an article earlier this week on the recession-proof rise of nail polish. According to the piece, nail polish sales have increased by 54% in the past year, replacing lipstick as the ultimate luxury beauty item. I feel like I had a hand in this phenomenon — this is only my millionth nail polish post since starting this blog!
Deborah Lippmann ‘Since I Fell for You’ ($20 at Holt Renfrew)
This beauty editorial from October’s Vogue Japan is one of my favourites of the season. Styled by Anna Dello Russo, Crystal models some of the coolest makeup, well, ever. I love the throwback to 80s glam: big hair, big eyes, big lips… and short ruby red nails. I think, but am not entirely sure (I don’t have a copy of the issue), that the lacquer is Deborah Lippmann’s ‘Since I Fell for You’.
NARS ‘Chinatown’ ($21 at NARS)
If you want something equally rich but less sparkly, then check out NARS’s ‘Chinatown’, a beautiful high gloss, dark blood red.
Butter ‘Knees Up’ ($17 at Beautymark)
And if you want to keep the shimmer but go just a little lighter, then Butter’s ‘Knees Up’ might just be your go-to winter shade.

These shimmery reds are definitely a seasonal thing that work best for fall/winter season. I also really dig the ruby red eyeliner Crystal is sporting, but I think nail polish is a lot more doable.

Back to the article: how many nail polishes did you buy this year?
