Tosca Delfino S/S 2011

Tosca Delfino’s debut swimwear collection, “Down Under the Brooklyn Bridge,” is far from amateur. If I were to describe this collection, the word ‘love’ would be an understatement. It’s well thought out, beautifully cut and imagined through original prints. The collection takes inspiration from the cities that she has lived in and loved: Sydney, Milan, Brooklyn and Toronto. Its silhouettes and colour themes draw from vintage concepts, but does not feel dated in any way. Tosca’s original prints, about to become her signature, range from soft florals to animal friends, like the dolphin (or ‘delfino’ in Italian!) and an elephant, to an ingenious areal photograph of Sydney’s Bondi beach.
This Toronto native now lives in Milan where she cut her teeth working for Missoni. She made her big debut at Rosemount Australian Fashion Week and it’s no doubt that we will be seeing much more of her work in the future.

Why swimwear?
I love the beach and the culture that surrounds it!
You have lived in Canada, Australia and you now live in Italy.  How much have all these places influenced your design?
Every country I have either lived in or traveled to has been a huge influence on my designs. My best friends, who live all over the world, have been the main influence on the styles. They are all beautiful women with different body types and personalities which comes through in my designs. I just returned from Brazil which will definitely influence my next collection.

Having worked at Missoni and looking at your collection, it’s obvious that you love a great print! What inspires your print design?
Mostly from travel and various cultures. All my prints are unique and exclusive to the Tosca Delfino swimwear label. For example the ‘Chang’ elephant print was created when I was in Thailand. Not only is the Chang one of the most famous beers in Thailand but elephants are known to create bonds, not only with their family, but also friendships with different species.

The word “swimsuit,” more often than not, evokes a feeling of anxiety with most women — do you sometimes feel like that too?
I think anxiety can stem from more than just swimwear. When regarding fashion, it’s important to know your body type and dress accordingly. This will boost your confidence.
What are some things we should be considering when choosing swimwear?

What looks best for your body type. Fabric quality and style are key!

On whom would you like to see your swimsuits?

I would love to see confident women who value great design wearing Tosca Delfino swimwear where they see fit: from beaches to pool side, or even paired with a ready-to-wear look. That would make me smile.

Which swimsuit would you bring to a desert island with you?
I would bring the entire collection. They take up so little room in my suitcase… Is that allowed?

Your favourite music to listen to on the beach or poolside?

Dragonette, Art Department, Will Saul, Tam Cooper, Bob Marley, Ben Harper, Passion Pit, MGMT, INXS, Santogold, Adele, Kevin Hammond to name a few.
